Layering knitwear is an art — done well, it looks effortless; done wrong, it adds bulk in all the wrong places. Here's how to get it right.
Mix Weights, Not Just Colors
Pair a thinner base layer with one statement chunky piece, rather than stacking multiple heavy knits. A ribbed turtleneck under an oversized cardigan works better than two thick sweaters together.
Tuck Strategically
Tucking your base layer into your trousers or skirt removes bulk at the waist, letting your outer knit layer fall cleanly instead of bunching up.
Balance Proportions
If your top layer is oversized, keep your bottom half streamlined — fitted trousers or a slim skirt. If you're wearing wide-leg pants, opt for a more fitted knit on top.
Choose the Right Fabrics
Fine-gauge knits layer more easily than chunky cable knits. Save your thickest sweaters for your outermost layer, and use thinner knit tops underneath.
Don't Skip the Structure
A single structured piece — like a belt, or a jacket worn open over your knitwear — breaks up the softness of an all-knit outfit and keeps it from reading as shapeless.
